The stark reversal in trends has Arch talking about its thermal coal assets in the Powder River Basin differently in 2021. During a recent earnings call, executives laid out plans for a nearterm closure of the company's Coal Creek mine in the basin and an "accelerated" closure of the much larger Black Thunder mine.
The Powder River Basin produced nearly 420 million tons of coal in 2009 and accounted for 50% of the electricity generation in the United States. The four large, publicly traded coal companies that dominated PRB production were so flush with cash they were taking on billions in debt to fuel extensive expansion and growth.
Most of the coal produced in the PRB supports electric power generation in the United States. Starting in the 1990s, many coalfired power plants switched to subbituminous coal from the PRB—which has relatively low sulfur content—to meet tightening Clean Air Act emission 2003, the Powder River Basin yielded more coal than the Appalachian coal basins in the eastern United States.
