According to the wiki, you need to input specific recipes into the grinder. The recipes, are as follows, and require items of the same rarity in every case but the legendary case: Legendary of desired type: 2 legendary weapons + 1 purple weapon of the desired type. On top of my head, you can't use MG on 3 purple weapons to get a legendary, it has to be a purple weapon + 2 legendaries + MG for a guaranteed legendary of your choice (the purple weapon). The recipe to get X type of weapon is 1 purple weapon of desired type + 2 legendary weapons. If you add moonstone, it's guaranteed to be a Legendary but not all recipes will let you moonstone grind. You cannot do it with shields or class mods and you cannot do it with glitch weapons. I'm not sure for other recipes but this one is 210 moonstone.
